Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a way of thinking about teaching and learning that helps give all students an equal opportunity to succeed and become expert learners. This approach offers flexibility in the ways students access material, engage with it and show what they know. Developing lesson plans this way helps all kids, but it may be especially helpful for kids with learning and thinking differences. Participants will understand what the term UDL is and the guidelines based on three UDL principles: Engagement, Representation, Action & Expression and how they help educators plan for learner variability, minimize barriers to learning, and design optimal learning environments. Participants will also make connections between the instructional design process and student learning outcomes. Then, they will research and review UDL tools and strategies and transfer the learning by applying the UDL framework to their own instructional design.
